Guide To Red Eye Flights 👁️

I realize that "red-eye" is a term that we use in the USA for flights that are flown at night during bedtime. Passengers who fly these may have red, tired eyes which lends itself to the phrase, "red eye flights".

My first red-eye ever was to the state of Wisconsin in 2013. It was rough. I don’t even know if I slept on the flight. I may have watched a movie and was excited that I was on a plane to begin with (I was just beginning to travel that year). I probably didn’t sleep because I was sitting in economy. From that, I vowed to not fly red-eye ever again.

Ten years later, I change my mind about these flights. I like them, but they only work for certain destinations. Specifically, if you’re going from the west coast USA to the east coast, or the Caribbean. Or even flying south to Central America.

In 2018 I flew to New York City on a red-eye. Again, I was excited to be traveling and didn't sleep on the plane so that first day in NYC was brutal for me to day the least. I remember getting off the plane and immediately starting the day. It was 8am. And I'm not a morning person, y'allllll.

Recently I flew to Panama on red-eye, and it worked out because it saved me one night at a hotel. Since 2018, I've been doing better getting sleep on these flights. Here are some tips:

  1. Brush your teeth/wash your face/use the restroom before you board the plane.

  2. Stop drinking water after 7 or 7:30pm. Little sips are okay but this is to make sure you don't have to get up to use the restroom on the plane.

  3. Don't watch movies and stay awake. Keep your area dark so you can sleep.

  4. Have an alcoholic beverage if you can't sleep.

  5. Take a melatonin just before boarding.

  6. Have a window seat... trust me this is the best seat when you're sleeping because you can lean on the wall if you have to.

  7. Use the Original Dream Strap to sleep. This keeps your head and neck from flopping! Personally I think it's so much better than a U-shape neck pillow. Use CLAUDEEN30 for 30% off!

Have you ever flown a red-eye flight? What do you think of them?
